Update Tuesday - Microsoft and Adobe

Last Tuesday was the monthly update day for Microsoft and Adobe. Microsoft had updates to address critical security flaws in their operating system and in their Internet Explorer web browser. Adobe patched security flaws in Flash player and delayed a patch for Adobe Reader until next week due to reported issues with the update.

Last Tuesday was update Tuesday for Microsoft and Adobe.

Microsoft released it's usual batch of Updates for Windows as well as an announcement that they will only be supporting the latest version of Internet Explorer starting at the beginning of 2015 2016.

Adobe released security updates for Flash Player and Reader.

Another update Tuesday

Yesterday Microsoft pushed out security updates for Windows and Internet Explorer. Adobe also pushed out a security update for Flash player (version 14.0.0.145). Oracle says there is an update for Java due next Tuesday but it will not be compatible with Windows XP (which Microsoft has already ended support for earlier this year).

Update Tuesday

Last Tuesday updates were released for Adobe Flash as well as several security updates from Microsoft.

As always, it's a good time to check that you have the latest updates installed for your browser plugins and operating system.

Update Tuesday

Seems like the last update Tuesday was only a few days ago but here it is again. Microsoft released several updates including an update to IE 10 that fixes a current exploit being used to take control of computers. Adobe also released an update for Flash Player.

Update Tuesday

It was update Tuesday yesterday. Microsoft released several patches that fix 31 security issues in Windows. These should be installed as soon as possible.

Adobe also released an update to their Flash Player plugin last week that fixes a critical security issue that was being used to install malware on computers. They also released an update to their Shockwave player that resolves some other security issues.

If you are unsure if you have these plugins installed now would be a good time to check your browser plugins and make sure they are up-to-date. Mozilla has a nice plugin checker.

Update Tuesday (Microsoft, Adobe and Oracle)

It's update Tuesday again. Today updates were released from Microsoft, Adobe and Oracle that fix critical vulnerabilities in Windows (Microsoft), Office (Microsoft), Acrobat (Adobe), AIR (Adobe), Flash Player (Adobe), and Java (Oracle). It's important to install these updates as soon as possible.

Note that the Java update tries to install a toolbar by default. You likely want to un-check that option.

Update Tuesday

It seems I forgot to post the last few times. So if you haven't checked your updates recently now is a good time to verify that everything is up-to-date.

Update Tuesday

Last Tuesday was update Tuesday. There were several updates from Microsoft for Windows and Office. There have been reports that one of those updates can take quite a while to install - 30 to 40 min.

There was an update to Adobe Flash Player (11.8.800.168) and Adobe Reader (11.0.4 and 10.1.8) released by Adobe.

Oracle also released an update for Java (Java 7 update 40).

A mostly unremarkable update Tuesday

It's update Tuesday again and this month so far we only have security updates from Microsoft and only three of them have received the highest severity of critical out of eight total bulletins published. Altogether a light Tuesday for updates, we will see what the rest of the month will bring.

Update Tuesday is on us again. Microsoft has released 7 patches including a patch for an exploit in their font rendering system that is quite critical to deploy as soon as possible.

Adobe has also released an update to flash player.

As usual updates should be installed automatically or prompt for installation. If they don't there are links on the side to download them manually.

Now is also a good time to check your web browser versions to make sure they are being updated. Firefox should be at 22 and Chrome should be at 28. You can find this info in the "about" menu option.

It's update Tuesday again. This month we have some security updates from Microsoft including a critical update for Internet Explorer 8 that fixes an issue currently being exploited on some web pages.

Adobe also released updates for Flash Player and Reader/Acrobat that should be installed as soon as possible.

Mozilla released a critical update for the Firefox browser and Thunderbird mail reader that resolves a few security issues.

Finally, I also forgot to make my post for last month that included an update for Java.

Updates and Soon to be Updates

Microsoft released it's regular monthly updates this last Tuesday. Included in this latest round of updates were critical updates to Internet Explorer that should be installed as soon as possible (even if you don't use Internet Explorer as your default browser).

Adobe also made an announcement about some security issues in Acrobat and Adobe Reader that are currently being used to exploit computers. They will be pushing out updates for those issues soon.

Updates for January and manual patch for IE7/8

It's update Tuesday for Microsoft. There are 7 update bulletins that cover fixes to more than 11 different vulnerabilities. In addition there is a critical manual update for Internet Explorer on Windows XP clients that needs to be applied.

If you are still running Windows XP (which Microsoft is dropping security support for in February) you need to install this fix-it patch. You should install the patch even if you are not using Internet Explorer as your default browser. If you are using IE 9 or 10 you don't need the patch.

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7 you need to make sure you are upgraded to IE 9.

UPDATE: Adobe also release security updates for Flash and Adobe Reader today.

Update Tuesday again

It's a little late but last Tuesday was update Tuesday for Microsoft, Adobe and Apple.

Microsoft release several updates for Windows, Office and IE. Adobe released updates for FlashPlayer. Apple has updated their QuickTime player for Windows.

Microsoft and Adobe Flash updates

It's update Tuesday again. Microsoft and Adobe have both released patches. There is as-of-yet no patch from Oracle for the Java 7 flaw in my last post but they may release one latter today still.

Microsoft patches fix several flaws in Office as well as Windows. Adobe released a patch for Flash Player. Theses should be applied as soon as possible.

Update Tuesday and Java flaw

Microsoft has a few bug-fix updates this Tuesday, nothing critical.

Java 7 update 7 has a new flaw that is being exploited from web pages. There isn't currently an update to fix this flaw yet. My recommendation is to disable Java except for when you need it. Alternatively you can uninstall Java 7 and install Java 6.

Steps to disable Java in major browsers:

Internet Explorer:
From the gear icon on the upper right select Manage add-ons.
Select All add-ons from the Show drop-down on the left.
Click on each Java add-on and disable it.

Firefox:
Select Add-ons from the Firefox menu at the top-left.
Select Plugins on the left.
Disable all Java plugins.


Chrome:
Type in chrome://plugins into the address bar.
Disable all Java plugins.
Note: Chrome will prompt before it runs the Java plugin so disabling Java in Chrome is not strictly necessary.

Enabling Java again follows the same steps just select enable instead of disable. You can enable and disable plugins without closing and opening the browser again. Only enable Java for trusted sites and disable it again when you are done.

It's Update Tuesday

We've got the usual line up this month:

Microsoft has several updates for Windows, Internet Explorer and Office that need installed.

Oracle also released update 6 for Java 7 (this didn't appear to include any security updates). Java version 6 is still at update 33.

Adobe released an update for Adobe Reader and Acrobat that fixes a few critical flaws.

The last few versions of Adobe Flash Player included a new auto update service that some systems were having issues with. There is an updated version of Adobe Flash Player downloadable that includes fixes for these problems. Update time again

This month is lite on the required security updates. Microsoft has released 9 security advisories this month 6 of which are listed as critical. Adobe released an update for Flash player that should be installed automatically with their new update service.
